Secrets...

by Kris
(Oregon)

About 8 years ago I left a great job at a local bank. I had about 50,000 in a 401k. My husband and I had a lot of debt, about 30,000 in consumer debt at the time.

My biggest mistake was cashing out that 401k and taking a $20,000 penalty to pay off that debt leaving me with no retirement fund.

My second biggest mistake was not discussing it with my husband, as I'm sure he would have said no and found another way to deal with it.

To this day he still doesn't know. Although we still have debt, (new debt, and much less) we live within our means much better than we did back in those days.
